History Of Music Video


Introduction

- In our generation, modern day music videos have drastically changed since. For instant, a long time ago music videos consisted of only motion pictures. However nowadays, technological advancements have allowed artists to express their talents in a more technological way. This has allows artists to attract a larger fan based and features their music videos on a wide range of media platforms. It has also allowed artist to expand their popularity.



History of Music Videos Timeline





1929: Songs and moving images.

- Bessie Smith appeared in a two-real shot film called ''Saint Louis Blues (19290'' featuring a dramatized performance of the hit song.
- Could this be regarded as a music video ? The answer is no, because it is seen and identified as part of a short film due to the artist only appeared to sat on the bar and sang without any editing or moving images.




1920 - 1940: Songs and moving images.

- In 1940, Walt Disney released ''Fatasia''. This is an animated film based around famous pieces of classical music.
- Many films were accompanied by sound, especially animations.





1950: (1956)

- Tony Bennett is filmed walking in Hyde Park London for his song ''Stanger in Paradise''. The single/video was distributed on US and UK television, leading Bennett to claim he made the first music video.





- Tony Bennett's music video arguably set out the basic visual vocabulary of todays music videos, influencing vast number of contemporary musician at the time to create similar moving images to accompany their music.



1966 - 1968:

- ''The Monkees'' was a TV show. Each episode included a specifically made film segment that was created to accompany their songs.



- The birth of ''Top of the Pops'' used to promote singles so artists had to create competitive videos to compete for air time.
- Videos used techniques borrowed from film ideas. The start of The Beatles - ''Penny Lane''.






1975:

- Queen - ''Bohemian Rhapsody'' created to replace a live TV performance.




 
1970 - 1980:

- The key development of the modern music video was video recording with editing processes. High quality via tape recorders and portable cameras enabled pop artists such as ''The Jacksons'' due to them having a high budget to make their best music videos possible and is worth watching.







1981:


- MTV is launched. First music video aired was Buggles - ''Video killed the Radio Star''.






1984:

- Michael Jackson - ''Thriller'' took music video format to another level.






1980's: MTV and musical success...

- Music video would, by the mid 1980's, grow to play a central role in popular music marketing.
- Madonna owed a great deal of her success to the skilful construction and seductive appeal of her videos.
- Although many see MTV as the start of a ''golden era'' of music videos and the unparalleled success of a new art form in popular culture. Others see it as hastening the death of the true musical artist because physical appeal is now critical to popularity to an unprecedented degree.




Conclusion

- All the information above has really gave me an eye opening experience back into the history of the music industry from the start of music videos until today. This has been beneficial because it allows me to understand the characteristics of music video more and how I would adapt and uses tips from this to make my own music video.
