Planning: Location - Ms Begum

Location

Introduction:

- As a group, we have decided to choose multiple locations to portray our narrative, performance and star image through out our music video. The locations which we have chosen were the street (quite/busy), the bed room, the sofa, the forest and in a studio. We have chosen these locations as it fit the themes and the genre as well as allowing us to make our music video appealing to our audiences.

Location 1: The dark room

Relevant lyrics: "My druggy" 'Love me, " When I'm ugly" Hug me"

Relevant to genre: Rap music is very conventional in dark locations as it adds visual aids to the music video.

Relevant to target audience: The audience can relate as when they have relationship trouble they to sit in a dark room all by themselves thinking abut the relationship problems.

Describe locations: The dark  room is going to be used at the start of music video as we need to show the audience that the artist is in a dark place getting high and thinking about someone( his druggy). This will help portray the theme of loneliness and addiction.

Advantages of location: A dark location can be achieved very easily and this location shooting would save time in our production.

Pontential problems and how you will overcome them: Dark location can be hard to film and hazards are that someone could be hurt in the dark location we will overcome this by making sure the room is clear of any objects that could be a danger.

Existing videos that have influenced us with this idea:
The weeknd- King of the fall

Location 2: The street

Relevant to lyrics: "Let's get lost -t The male artist will be walking on the street saying these words throughout.

Relevant to genre: In hip-hop/RN'B it is conventional to rap in the street, as it is specifically the locational origin of hip-hop.

Relevant to target audience: The target audience are usually appealed to singing/rapping on the street. This will easily appeal to our target audience.

Describe location:
This location will be used throughout the music video. It will be specific ally used to show the male character in the music video thinking of his imagination and being emotional about it.

Advantages of this location: This location is easily accessible to film and also it is conventional to the themes that will be represented in our music videos.

Potential problems and how you will overcome them: There might be complaints from randon people of being recorded. Therefore we will edit them out from our music video. Also, we could be hit accidently by vehicles.

Existing videos that have influenced you with this Idea:
Chance the rapper-Juice

Location 3: The bedroom

Relevant to lyrics: "She met her match", "It let her match", "She lit  her match", "She let me smile".
These lyrics will be said when the female artist lights the match for the male's cigarette. The scene shows passion which is shown through the lyrics.

Relevant to genre: This setting is a typical place where sexual interaction occurs, as it is usually represented in hip hop and Rn'b.

Relevant to target audience: Our target audience, who are young adults can relate this as they usually goes through relationship issues. People usually go to their bedrooms when they are in a relationship dilemma, this is what will appeal to our target audience.

Describe location: There will be sexual interaction taking place in the music video and the bedroom will be used to portray that. This helps portray the theme of sexual love.

Advantages of location: The location is easily accessible to film, it also can be flexible when used.

Potential problems and how you will overcome them: There is a danger of lighting a cigarette in the bedroom as there are bedroom materials that are highly flammable. We will overcome this by having water nearby and using the safest lighting effect.

Planning: Analysing similar videos - Ms Begum

Analysing similar videos

Introduction:

- Within my group, we have decided to analyse some music videos that are going to help us developed our ideas in term of content, representation and structure.
Video 1: Cashmere Cat - Wedding bells

- Whilst analysing this music video, we focused on the structure that's being portrayed in this music video.

Performance:

- There isn't any performance in this video because there is no artist involve.

Narrative:

- The narrative is about a relationship between the two male and female from the beginning to the end. Through ups and downs, they have never left each other's sides and in the end we see the female actor stood the beach before a straight cut where the video ends.

- We are looking forward to use some similar ideas from this video and adapt and change it to ours because we have the same kind of narrative about the relationship between two people.

Concept:

- This music video portrayed a mixture of narrative and concept. There are also relations between music and visual within this video such as when the two actors argue, the editing become faster with more straight cut and jump cut. The music is also played really fast to match up with the narrative.

- Moreover, the climax breaks down when all the fighting between the two have stopped. The editing become slower and the music became quite with just piano playing.

 - The idea of two people when they are first met and when they spend time at places together are really effective through the use of micro-elements such as the setting being in the forest, shopping mall and the use of jump cut into nature images of birds flying away when they're making out and reach to point of climax. From here, the pace of the music plus the editing get faster.

Balance of 3:

- The balance within this music video is very narrative based. However, after 20 seconds each we then see some concept images of the nature such as the beach, the sky, the birds showing then repeats throughout the song.

Video 2&3: The Weeknd - King of the fall + Ciara - Body Party

- Whilst analysing these two music video, we focused on the star image and star performance that's being portrayed.

Representation of male artist:

- In this music video, the male artist certainly has a star image. He is represented as a male who has sexual feelings, at the start of the video a medium shot with slow editing is used to show him slowly leaving with a attractive female lying in the bed where he is walking away from. This relates to our final idea because our final artist will relate to the theme of sexual feeling, the only difference is that the final idea will be a imagination. In a way, the male is represented as lonely, especially when he says the lyrics " Cause my life too private". The representation of this male in the video
This music video influenced us as a group to look at the way the male artist was represented in the music video and how we could be use star image in our music video. For our final idea our male artist will be very dosing and trippy showing that he is under the influence of substances where the female artist is his drug this is why this music video is the best music video to use for ideas for our final idea. The use of star image in this music video is used very well and it is used effectively and used in a variety of ways which could be very good for our final idea.

Female artist representation:

- This song influenced our final Idea through the star Image of the female artist. As Goodwin theory states that star image motifs must occur in the music video as part of the 8 characteristics that make a music video in this video it occurs with the close up shots of the female's lips and body as well as the mid side shot of her dyed hair.  For our final idea , we are going to use a females actress an singer towards the end of the son in our music video. We want to present her image as a commodity what our target audience will be able to buy into.

Video 4: Kendrick Lamar - Poetic Justice

- Whilst analysing this music video, we focused on the video content that's being portrayed within this video below.

Video content:

This music video contains themes of love, relationships and tragedy. The music video relates to the video content that we want to use in our final idea as love and relationships are shown with the male dreaming getting high on his female imagination. Tragedy could also be used in our final idea when in our music video it will be discovered if the imagination is real. This is how this music links in with our final idea, in the context of video content.

Planning: Outline of Narrative - Ms Begum

Outline of Narrative

- After finalising our final idea for Chance The Rapper - ''Lost'', we as a group have analysed the song in details in which we believe that the themes portrayed within the song involves love, sex, relationship and addiction. Also, we have decided to use a mixture of performance and narrative to display the narrative of the artist's getting intoxicated over the music. The song is use to symbolise the idea of drugs. Whilst getting 'high' over the song, the artist them meets his imaginary girlfriend who only exists when he listens to this one particular song. The overall idea is about the relationship between him and her, reality and imagination.

Analysis of my music video:

- The song starts with the first hook displaying the artist's feeling of love and wanting to escape. This will be film at three locations such as the bathtub, bedroom and roof top. Here I will display this by having the artist perform lip syncing to the camera through the use of mid shot and various range of close up shots. I will use a mixture of narrative when the lyrics state ''I'm your hubby let's get lost, let's get lost''. In this line, we will display an image of the artist's hand holding his imaginary girlfriend's hand by zooming in at the image and make it come to life where the artist and the female escape into the dream world. The 'dream world' will be portrayed through the use of special effect with some footage that we will be collecting where the artist and the female escape into the forest, to the beach or in the bed room. Slow motion editing plus adding in different filters will be use to portray the dream world being colourful. However, when this is sung ''My druggy, love me when I'm ugly, Hug me when I'm bummy, scummy'', I will use star performance by having some shots of flash back where the artist's being half concious in real life and some shots of the dream world showing that he is intoxicated.

The song then goes to the verse one where a combination of star performance, narrative and features of popular culture which is dance will be included, Star performance will be used in the first four line showing star image through the use of cinematography which are identified as handheld, point of view and mid shot. The narrative then comes in after a straight cut for the next three lines displaying the imaginary girl trying to seduce him in very little clothing. Another straight cut is then used to bring back to the star performance where the artist will be duplicated into another three clones of himself singing the lyrics where it states ''ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh''.

Star performance and dancing will be use throughout the whole of the second hook/chorus. Here, the artist will be dancing along with other backup dancers performing to the camera. This will be filmed i Central London at night time. We have chosen to do this because we want to show off the artist's other talent rather than just singing. This is done purposely to big up and to sell our artist in order to attract a massive fan base. Straight cut will be use continuously to show the artist lip syncing and dancing at the same time through out. Whilst this is happening, there will be some quick shot of the female artist silhouette of her whole body and her lips.

The third verse is when the female artist is introduced to the music video. We as a group have decided to instead of presenting 'Male Gaze' to portray our female artist, we want to keep the artist's identity hidden. This means we will portray a various range of long shot of the artist's whole body through her silhouette and some close up from different angles showing half of her face but being covered with her hair and some extreme close up of her lips. This will be filmed in a studio. This will be include with the female artist performing dance when her silhouette is shown. This whole verse will be star performance and star image. Most will be concentrated on the female artist but some straight cut will be used to display the narrative of the male artist spending time with his imaginary girlfriend.

The last hook will be a mixture of star performance and narrative where the male artist kisses his girlfriend in bed and standing up at a bridge. All of this will be portrayed in slow-motion. Star image will also be portrayed in slow-motion back to when the artist get intoxicated in the beginning of the song. His imaginary girlfriend will then disintegrate slowly as the song is coming to an end. This will be filmed in a studio with a plain white wall. In the end where the lyrics state ''Igh'', that is when the artist snap out back into reality showing he being woken up suddenly and find himself in the bathtub or bed.

Relation to theories that we have studied:

Andrew Goodwin:

- Notion of looking
- Relation between lyrics and visual
- Relation between music and visual
- Star Image
- Technical elements

Dyer:

- Star image will be present throughout
- Star image will represent audience expectation, culture value and ideology for instant, drinking, sex and relationship etc.
- It will show what's going on in the artist's mind when he is intoxicated.

Mulvey ''Male Gaze'':

- We will included the feature of ''Male Gaze'' but will not show too much skins due to the purpose of the song being unsuitable to present out female artist in a sexual way.

Hebdige ''Sub-culture'':

- We would like our audiences to be active about the song choice and to have an opinion amongst our music video due to different people having different background as well as viewpoint. But at the same time, we want to make our audiences feel like we have made this song for their entertainment.

Adorno:

- We will not follow the conventions of Adorno's theory due to the reason being of our audiences being active instead passive. Morever, we do consider our work as a piece of 'art' whereas the bourgeoisie doesn't consider it as 'true art'.

Conclusion:

-  The narrative of our music video is original and creative through a lot of discussing ideas between each member of our group to make a perfect match to the song. We do believe that our narrative ideas follow the conventions popular culture and mainstream.

Planning: Final Idea - Ms Begum

Final Idea

Artist: Chance the Rapper

Song title: Lost

Genre: Soul, Hip Hop, Rap and R&B

I have chosen the artist and the song because I believe that we as a group can represent the artist well and we have a good understanding of the genre to make a music video of this genre. Also it is mainstream and we can make the music video conventional to the music video genre.

Video content:

- The artist will be shown to be in love with a imaginary girl, he only sees her when he is listening to the song. There will be a movement of flashbacks out from a picture and in addition it will include pop culture such as dancing and acting.

Video structure:

- The video structure will performance and narrative.

Why have you chosen this:

- Star Image:  I will be using Dyers star image in my music video

Four elements:

Stars as constructions:

  • make them a unique selling point
  • how stars are given a artificial identity

  • Industry and audience:
    • stars are manufactured to make money
    • make the artist the product

    Ideology and culture:
    • need to have your own moral
    Characters and personality:

    Mise En Scenes:

    Two Music video influences:

    1) Chance The Rapper - ''Juice''

    2) Cashmere Cat - ''Wedding Bells''

    Planning: Audience - Ms Begum

    Audience

    Introduction

    - It is important to know who my audiences are so that I'm able to use what is conventions and what is appealing to them. Also to understand their perception of what they might like and what understanding and meaning they can take from my music video.

    - Age: 15-25 - this is because they will understand the themes within the Hip-hop genre the most due to them being young and the genre is something that they can fairly familiarise with.

    - Genre: Unisex - this is because the music is appealing to both genders due to the themes such as love/relationship and conventional features of the Hip hop / Soul genre within the music video.

    - Race: Multiple races - this is because the music is fairly common and easily understood for all the races to understand simply due to the simple concept and narrative of the video.

    - Audience Category: E - C2 - this is because they will enjoy and prefer this genre of Hip hop / Soul more than the high categories due to them being young and may be able to relate to the narrative within the music video.

    - Income Bracket / Status: Low income (0 - 20,000 per annum) / Low status - this is because my music genre isn't likely to appeal to those of a high audience category. Therefore income will generally be lower as well as the status.

    - Hobbies & Interests: Dancing, Drinking, Singing, Partying etc. - this is because these themes are likely the most appealing to the younger/lower audience category due to them being able to relate to their hobbies and other interests.

    Audience reaction to my video:
I would like my audience to respond to my audience in all ways (Audience Engagement, Expectation, Identification, Placement and  Foreknowledge)

Audience engagement: I want my audience to interact and relate to my music video with different viewpoints as a narrative is fairly common and easily relatable.

Audience expectation: I want to meet my audience's expectation and their needs so I created a questionnaire to find out what they prefer to see in a music video.

Audience identification: I want my audience to be able to relate to my artist in a way where they feel like someone else might be experiencing the same thing that they are going through or have been through rather than feeling like they are the only one.

Audience placement: By including a narrative into my music video, I want my audience to be able they to relate to the narrative and make them feel like the song is made for them.

Audience foreknowledge: I want my audience to have assumptions about the star and the video because it is a genre that is relatable and has a clear set of codes and conventions. I want to be able to expect certain things from the star.

     - this is important to know because I want to collect as much information from my target as possible to be able to meet their expectations and understand their needs as well as their background. This will benefit my planning for my music video as it allows me to extend my creativity and includes those features that appeal most to my audience.

Why is it important to know about audiences when creating a music video?

    - It is very important to know about audiences when creating a music video because if a music video doesn't includes any features that are relatable or isn't includes the conventional features to the music genre, it is more likely that the music video will not be successful. Therefore, knowing about audiences when creating a music video is beneficial because I can learn more about my audience's background, what they prefer, what they like/dislike in a music video and what music genre is most appealing to my target audience. Collecting these information allows me to work harder on my music video to includes as much conventional features of the genre that my audience prefer as well as being creative with my narrative and performance concept so that my music video can be more enjoyable to watch and at the same time appealing to my audiences.

Planning: Feedback on graph - Ms Begum

    Feedback on graph

    - This graph shows that most people tend to prefer the male artist to be around the age of 20-31. This is very beneficial as I now know who to use as an artist in my music video in order to meet the audience's expectations.

    - This graph shows that female actors/dancers presenting 'Male Gaze' is important to the music video due to a very large amount of people agree with this question. This is very beneficial as it has allowed me to find out another feature to use in order to make a successful music video.

    - This graph shows that a lot of people agree with having dancing in a music video. This is beneficial as it is an advantage to my music video due to me being a dancer myself so I could easily get this done to add on to my music video to meet the audience's needs.

    - This graph again shows that most people agree with having the music video being shot in various locations rather than just in one single location. This is beneficial as I can extend my creativity to film the music video in location where it follows the RnB conventions but still keep the originality of my idea to make a successful music video.

    - This graph shows that the viewers prefer the artist to dress in smart/fancy suit due to most people that I've asked prefer that option on top of others that was provided. This is beneficial as I can now know what my artist should wear attracts a larger audience.

    Conclusion

    - All the graph above has been collected after delivering my questionnaire to twenty people with unisex and different age groups along with different ethnicity and occupation. The results collected have really been beneficial as I have now know what the audience expect and what they want to see in a music video. I will use these feedback carefully and consider ideas that will support my music video to be a success.
