Planning: Outline of Narrative - Ms Begum

Outline of Narrative

- After finalising our final idea for Chance The Rapper - ''Lost'', we as a group have analysed the song in details in which we believe that the themes portrayed within the song involves love, sex, relationship and addiction. Also, we have decided to use a mixture of performance and narrative to display the narrative of the artist's getting intoxicated over the music. The song is use to symbolise the idea of drugs. Whilst getting 'high' over the song, the artist them meets his imaginary girlfriend who only exists when he listens to this one particular song. The overall idea is about the relationship between him and her, reality and imagination.

Analysis of my music video:

- The song starts with the first hook displaying the artist's feeling of love and wanting to escape. This will be film at three locations such as the bathtub, bedroom and roof top. Here I will display this by having the artist perform lip syncing to the camera through the use of mid shot and various range of close up shots. I will use a mixture of narrative when the lyrics state ''I'm your hubby let's get lost, let's get lost''. In this line, we will display an image of the artist's hand holding his imaginary girlfriend's hand by zooming in at the image and make it come to life where the artist and the female escape into the dream world. The 'dream world' will be portrayed through the use of special effect with some footage that we will be collecting where the artist and the female escape into the forest, to the beach or in the bed room. Slow motion editing plus adding in different filters will be use to portray the dream world being colourful. However, when this is sung ''My druggy, love me when I'm ugly, Hug me when I'm bummy, scummy'', I will use star performance by having some shots of flash back where the artist's being half concious in real life and some shots of the dream world showing that he is intoxicated.

The song then goes to the verse one where a combination of star performance, narrative and features of popular culture which is dance will be included, Star performance will be used in the first four line showing star image through the use of cinematography which are identified as handheld, point of view and mid shot. The narrative then comes in after a straight cut for the next three lines displaying the imaginary girl trying to seduce him in very little clothing. Another straight cut is then used to bring back to the star performance where the artist will be duplicated into another three clones of himself singing the lyrics where it states ''ooh, ooh, ooh, ooh''.

Star performance and dancing will be use throughout the whole of the second hook/chorus. Here, the artist will be dancing along with other backup dancers performing to the camera. This will be filmed i Central London at night time. We have chosen to do this because we want to show off the artist's other talent rather than just singing. This is done purposely to big up and to sell our artist in order to attract a massive fan base. Straight cut will be use continuously to show the artist lip syncing and dancing at the same time through out. Whilst this is happening, there will be some quick shot of the female artist silhouette of her whole body and her lips.

The third verse is when the female artist is introduced to the music video. We as a group have decided to instead of presenting 'Male Gaze' to portray our female artist, we want to keep the artist's identity hidden. This means we will portray a various range of long shot of the artist's whole body through her silhouette and some close up from different angles showing half of her face but being covered with her hair and some extreme close up of her lips. This will be filmed in a studio. This will be include with the female artist performing dance when her silhouette is shown. This whole verse will be star performance and star image. Most will be concentrated on the female artist but some straight cut will be used to display the narrative of the male artist spending time with his imaginary girlfriend.

The last hook will be a mixture of star performance and narrative where the male artist kisses his girlfriend in bed and standing up at a bridge. All of this will be portrayed in slow-motion. Star image will also be portrayed in slow-motion back to when the artist get intoxicated in the beginning of the song. His imaginary girlfriend will then disintegrate slowly as the song is coming to an end. This will be filmed in a studio with a plain white wall. In the end where the lyrics state ''Igh'', that is when the artist snap out back into reality showing he being woken up suddenly and find himself in the bathtub or bed.

Relation to theories that we have studied:

Andrew Goodwin:

- Notion of looking
- Relation between lyrics and visual
- Relation between music and visual
- Star Image
- Technical elements

Dyer:

- Star image will be present throughout
- Star image will represent audience expectation, culture value and ideology for instant, drinking, sex and relationship etc.
- It will show what's going on in the artist's mind when he is intoxicated.

Mulvey ''Male Gaze'':

- We will included the feature of ''Male Gaze'' but will not show too much skins due to the purpose of the song being unsuitable to present out female artist in a sexual way.

Hebdige ''Sub-culture'':

- We would like our audiences to be active about the song choice and to have an opinion amongst our music video due to different people having different background as well as viewpoint. But at the same time, we want to make our audiences feel like we have made this song for their entertainment.

Adorno:

- We will not follow the conventions of Adorno's theory due to the reason being of our audiences being active instead passive. Morever, we do consider our work as a piece of 'art' whereas the bourgeoisie doesn't consider it as 'true art'.

Conclusion:

-  The narrative of our music video is original and creative through a lot of discussing ideas between each member of our group to make a perfect match to the song. We do believe that our narrative ideas follow the conventions popular culture and mainstream.

  1. Really good planning of the video ideas here. The video idea is well scripted and layed out for you and the group to try and follow. Good reference to theory too, well done.
